A desk top soil survey may be sufficient to meet the needs of the planning authority, depending on its findings.

Generic quantitative risk assessment – Following a desk top review it may be necessary to conduct a more detailed soil survey that will involve a site survey.

Detailed quantitative risk sssessment – This will be undertaken if the contamination issues require a more detailed soil survey. It should be undertaken after the desk top study and generic quantitative risk assessment have been completed, as it is those initial assessments that will detail exactly what will be undertaken.
